Lost Islands
Joanna Whittle
19 Oct – 16 Nov
Opening 7:30pm Friday 18 Oct
Artist Talk 2nd November 2pm
Joanna Whittle’s paintings investigate the romantic notion of the ruin and how this operates in our current landscapes. She creates complex miniature worlds which refuse to reveal their secrets. Different times seem to exist concurrently and elude capture- moss, lichens and brambles often take over structures whilst lights are lit and evidence of recent activity is revealed.
‘Lost Islands’ refers to the illusory aspects within the work which both engages with and undermines reality.
Joanna Whittle’s ceramics represent artefacts and souvenirs from an imagined world through her development of ‘Whittleware’. These highly detailed pieces explore histories and narratives arising from the resonance of artefacts and souvenirs as well as questioning their authenticity.
