Habitat
Mixed Group Show
15 March - 19 April
Over 50 artists responded to the theme across media. Artists have looked at human, animal and insect habitats. The exhibition brings together a diverse response to the theme.
From collections of ceramic sculptures, delicate miniature pieces made from organic materials. through to large scale paintings, textile hangings and relief works, jewellery, photography, printmaking and mixed media conceptual work, there is plenty to see and think about!
From Manhattan, Sheffield, Bradford and Birmingham you can find artists exploring brutalist architecture, the isolation of urban environments and urban decay. These dispatches from the urban jungle come in many forms. From paintings showing the view from the twin towers to photographs taken in abandoned factories or even refuse rescued from the streets and reconstructed into sculptural forms.
It's not just the gritty settings of city life that we have on display, you will also find drawings of the intimate buttock impressions left on a sofa or a delicate aquatint of children perched on the windowsill of the family home or the delivery driver in his van; the more mundane habitats of everyday life or the hierarchies of corporate culture.
The animal kingdom and our wilder environments are painted and drawn, sculpted and embroidered across the exhibition. From the micro formations of algae and plant-life on discarded refuse to the bucolic sunny afternoons on the sandbanks of a river. Animals are given emotions or simply make us gaze in wonder at their majesty. The fragility of their habitats can be seen as well, the balance of the ecosystems rests in our hands." Graham Shapley, Curator
