“Making, drawing and painting are a large part of my identity. I cannot separate my work from life, or my life from the work, so when I am intrigued, influenced or overcome by an idea, it immerses itself into my work. There is a part of me that feels an overwhelming need to express it. This can be a symbol, repeated image or painted mark as I can become completely engrossed in the materials I use. The act of painting can be the central urge in creating a piece as can the hypnotic spin and touch of throwing on a wheel, or the primaeval basic squidge of clay between my fingers.
My work is always painted, and can be majolica painted earthenware, experiments with majolica stoneware, modelled, thrown or thrown & modelled or 2d.
The themes I usually use are figures and animals and I have ready available subjects in my family, cats and chickens, for my frequent research drawing, and experimentations with composition. I gained an Arts Council of Wales grant in 2010 to enable me to make larger pieces, and to focus on a more personal period of figurative experimentation. My current work is based on abstract figurative forms using parts of the body to express emotions and attitudes.”
