Moth & Magpie

Jeweller

Jewellery designer Ruth Claydon originally trained as a painter, but started reimagining jewellery whilst collecting and selling antique jewellery. ‘ It had to be in perfect condition to sell, and I found myself with a growing pile of gorgeous but not quite pristine pieces that I didn’t know what to do with.’ As it turns out , a material-led design process was borne of this, as well as an inclination towards a time washed, well loved aesthetic - redeeming the very perceived flaws that had started this journey in the beginning.

Look carefully and you’ll see that the earrings don’t match perfectly, that there is a deliberate knot in a chain. This wabi-sabi approach is a conscious choice, inspired by the often mismatched ancient excavated earrings found in museums. And of course the appeal is in owning a complete one off, a quiet rebellion against mass production and a different kind of luxury altogether.

‘I’ll play with a piece, analyse what I love most about it, even if it’s just the clasp. You can mentally (and of course physically) deconstruct any piece of jewellery and start from scratch with a bit of imagination.

I don’t sketch, I just create piles of jewels and gathered bits and pieces like little molehills on my desk until I decide on a good combination and then the assembly begins.’ Ruth Claydon
