Abstraction and landscape seem a natural place for me, mostly my work hovers in that place of semi-abstraction, where the character of the paint and materials can be explored to express an emotional connection with experiences. Contrasts are a key element; juicy thick impasto on top of thin transparent hazes, vibrant colour against muted hues, energetic brushstrokes alongside flattened smooth blocks of paint. My response is intuitive, working mostly from an amalgamation of memories, either in oil paint or mixed media on paper.
In particular I am influenced by the work of Joan Eardley, Joan Miro and Richard Cook.” Gill Gathercole

Land, Sea and Abstraction
Gillian Gathercole
”The colours in this current series of paintings, started in the preceding months to Covid, seemed to have progressed from a darker, more sombre palette to something brighter, seemingly searching for light and hope.
“Inspiration comes from the textures, shapes and colours of the land and sea, also the humans that pass through leaving their marks on both sometimes fleetingly, many times longer lasting…footpaths worn over years, bright debris scattered on the beach, a flash of a neon jacket on the hills.
