For those who do not know The Under The Bed Sale evolved out of a conversation with an artist friend, Lyn Hodnett, who many years ago invited me to view her work and pulled out a load of older work from under her bed.  When I asked whether she would exhibit these pieces, she said 'no' as they were out of date and no longer fitted with her current work.  However, when I asked her if she would sell them, she replied that she definitely would!  However, how could she sell them if she wasn't prepared to exhibit them? – To solve this dilemma, the Under The Bed Sale was born.  

The sale has grown year on year from its early beginnings around 20 years ago.  Every artist has older and early work and now the gallery receives packages from as far away as the Ukraine as well as from Sheffield and every other part of the UK.  Unusually, the gallery does not select the work for the sale and every artist (amateur or professional) can drop off work for the sale. Prices from under £1 to a maximum of £350.  Painting, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, glass, drawing, jewellery, photography and everything in between.  Mis-prints, experiments, slight seconds, sketch book work, out of date work, maquettes, life drawings, abstract work, figurative work, collage, conceptual pieces, still life pieces, etc.

“We never know what will be in the sale and that's why it is so much fun.  We have a customer that books a day off work every year to come up from London to enjoy the sale. Over 4000 items were delivered for the sale in 2017, let us see what 2018 brings.  An event not to be missed!”
