In Japanese, raku means 'enjoyment, comfort or ease'.
The wood firing technique of raku was created in Japan
in the 16th century and was originally used for
decorating tea bowls. It is the unpredictable nature of
raku that gives Hilary's pieces their unique organic
decoration.
“A trip to The Gambia provided the inspiration for my
Nautilus collection. Shells and bones were collected on
a deserted beach and these natural forms influenced
my current work. The naked raku finish brings the
forms to life.”
