“Having lived in rural France for much of the past ten years I was fascinated by the sight of the magnificent birds of prey. I became much more aware of the presence of Kestrels, Buzzards and Red Kites in the UK which quickly became the subject of my drawings and more recent 3-D pieces. I have been fascinated by the power, agility, vision and colour of these birds and look to reflect these characteristics in my work.
More recently I have focused on the fragility and understated beauty of familiar garden birds such as the wren and some more elusive birds including the kingfisher.
I studied Fine Art (BA Hons) at Leicester De Montfort University and exhibited in the Stowell’s Trophy at The Royal Academy. After graduating I was a freelance illustrator for Ladybird Books and exhibited watercolour paintings at The Old House Gallery, Oakham. I was the winner of the T. H. Saunders and Bockingford Watercolour Prize in 1980 and was shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1982.
After starting a family I taught Art to ‘A’ Level within Nottinghamshire Education.
More recently I have returned to focusing on my own paintings and sculptures from a small garden studio in Nottinghamshire.“ Chris Owen
